How do hosted zones work? What IP address do they scan from?

Hosted zones are runZero Explorers that we host on cloud systems. They make it easy for you to scan your external facing assets without needing to set up your own external scanner.

To use a hosted zone for a scan, create a scan task and choose "None" for the Explorer. You will then be able to pick a hosted zone for the scan.

Our hosted Explorers run on DigitalOcean's cloud infrastructure. They are only available for the runZero-hosted web console, not for self-hosted runZero.

If your system is self-hosted, you can run external hosted scans from our hosted console and then export the scan data and import it into your self-hosted console. Alternatively, you can set up your own hosted Explorer on a suitable cloud VM.

The hosted Explorers do not scan from any guaranteed fixed IP address. If you need to scan your external systems from a specific known IP address, you will need to set up your own external Explorer. Note that AWS in particular imposes limits that make it difficult to run an Explorer and successfully scan. We have had no problems hosting Explorers on DigitalOcean.
