What order does runZero scan IP addresses in? Should I break up scans?

Modified on Wed, Jan 24 at 10:48 AM

The entire target IP address range is randomized for each runZero scan.

  • Subnets are processed in a random order
  • Within each subnet the IP addresses are scanned in a random order

This means that breaking up a scan range into multiple tasks can increase the peak network load. If you scan a network as a single task, the runZero Explorer will be able to distribute the load (in packets per second) across the entire network. If you scan the same network with 5 separate tasks of equal size, for each task the same load will only be distributed across a fifth of the network.

Note that the runZero Explorer also limits how many different addresses it will scan at once, to avoid overloading routers. This parameter is adjustable as the Max group size.

The maximum number of simultaneous packets sent to any host can also be controlled, via the Maximum host rate parameter.
